DA, IFP fight Sisonke name change

OPPOSITION benches have vowed to take the proposed name change for Sisonke District Municipality to the Constitutional Court.

The district, which is in the ANC’s Harry Gwala region, comprises Greater Kokstad, Ubuhlebezwe (Ixopo), Umzimkhulu, Ingwe and KwaSani (Underberg) municipalities.

The ANC is planning to rename the municipality Harry Gwala District Municipality.

The Democratic Alliance and Inkatha Freedom Party believe there are more pressing issues facing the district than the need for a change of name.

DA provincial deputy leader Francois Rodgers said the name change was first raised in 2007 by Sisonke District Municipality and had been dealt in the normal “clandestine manner we have become accustomed to in the ANC”.

Rodgers said the change was a political decision. He highlighted service delivery problems in the area, including inadequate water and sanitation infrastructure.

Rodgers said that when the issue of overflowing toilets was raised, Sisonke people were told that the budget had been depleted.

IFP regional deputy secretary Zamo Ngidi said his party was also opposed to the name change because the projected R5 million to be used could be used in service delivery backlog.

District Mayor Mluleki Ndobe said he saw nothing untoward about the name change. “We were surprised to learn from the media that opposition parties were against name change …”
