DA, IFP walk snub mandate for bills

2014-03-26 00:00

THE Democratic Alliance and Inkatha Freedom Party walked out of a special sitting scheduled to confer mandates for a number of National Council of Provinces bills of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature yesterday.

Both parties said they were concerned at the haste at which a range of bills are being “rammed” through KZN’s ANC-dominated parliament, before the May 7 election.

The ANC Caucus issued a statement yesterday saying they condemned the “shameful, reckless and irresponsible act because it undermines the standing of the Legislature which is the primary platform through which our country’s democracy is exercised”.

“It is worrying that the DA and the IFP continue to undermine their own constituencies by walkouts which have become the tendency of these parties whenever they realise that they are not prepared for parliamentary debates.”
