DA KZN parliamentary candidate list leaked

THE race for parliamentary posts in the Democratic Alliance in KwaZulu-Natal is underway with a list of candidates who are earmarked for the selection process already formulated.

Although provincial party leader Sizwe Mchunu denied the existence of any list, The Witness can reveal that there are two lists of people who will undergo selection for both the KZN legislature and Parliament, containing 26 and 22 names respectively.

The signed lists, dated October 20, contain names that are in an alphabetical and unranked order.

While the name of Mchunu does not appear on the lists, he and party insiders said he would choose which list he preferred to be on once the candidate selection process was finalised.

The KZN legislature list shown to The Witness shows that the current serving MPLs Johann Krog, George Mari, Makhosazana Mdlalose, Mark Steele and Tom Stokes are vying for posts in the legislature.

Their colleagues Radley Keys and Mchunu are not on the lists.

The lists could see the DA Youth leader and eThekwini councillor Mbali Ntuli and former provincial leader and MP John Steenhuisen elected either in the legislature or Parliament.

The list also contains names of several councillors from eThekwini Metro and Msunduzi Municipality councillor Mergan Chetty.

The list for the National Assembly boasts names of serving MPs such as parliamentary leader Lindiwe Mazibuko, provincial chairperson Haniff Hoosen, Dianne Kohler Barnard and Greg Krumbock.

Some DA members appear on both lists, including Ntuli, Steenhuisen, provincial deputy leader Francois Rodgers, Edwin Baptie, Timothy Brauteseth, Chetty, Tex Collins, Richard Louis Fourie, Hlanganani Gumbi, Thomas Hadebe, Imran Keeka, Alf Lees, Dean MacPherson, Rafeek Shah and Tom Stokes.

Yesterday, Mchunu insisted there was no candidate list as yet. “The selection panel sits at the weekend to produce a list,” he said.

At least two independent sources said the selection process was already underway.

“If there is a list, it is for people who will be interviewed,” said a public representative appearing on one of the lists who is not authorised to speak to the media.

Another source said interviews and assessment of candidates still had to take place.

Mchunu said a candidate list would be taken to the leadership for consideration after the short-listing, screening, assessment and interviewing of nominated candidates was completed.
