DA: Ranger has a criminal past

2012-07-26 00:00

THE Democratic Alliance in KwaZulu-Natal said yesterday it would demand answers from Conservation and Environmental Affairs MEC Meshack Radebe following the disclosure that a ranger, Bheki Msweli, arrested on charges of dealing in rhino horns, was a wanted felon, believed to be linked to several serious crimes in the province.

Msweli and his co-accused, Malusi Dubazane, of Kwa Biyela, were arrested following a year-long undercover operation conducted by EKZNW and the Durban Organised Crime Unit.

The case of the two men, who are charged with dealing in rhino horns, has been transferred to the Johannesburg Magistrate’s court, where the accused are expected to appear again on August 2.

KZN Ezemvelo Wildlife spokesperson Musa Mntambo said Msweli started working for them in 2004, before the crimes were committed. “We actually helped to get him arrested,” Mntambo said.
