DA accuses ANC of breaking up its meeting

2010-08-27 00:00

THE Democratic Alliance in Newcastle has accused the ANC of disrupting a meeting on Wednesday.

DA councillor Thomas Hadebe said the meeting was disrupted by ANC supporters from Siyahlala informal settlement, who stormed the hall and demanded that the DA’s banners and literature be removed “because this is a community meeting”.

“I explained that this was a DA report-back meeting and that notices and SMSes that were sent to residents of ward 25 clearly indicated that the DA was the convener,” Hadebe said.

The intimidation by ANC supporters resulted in the meeting being stopped and the hall being trashed.

The chairperson of the ANC in the Amajuba region (Newcastle), Arthur Zwane, denied the meeting was a DA event.

He said it was called by the multi-party ward committee following complaints that ward councillor George Adamson had failed to attend a community meeting that he called in the area last week.
