DA calls on ICD to check if Vilakazi’s wife tried to defeat the ends of justice

THE Democratic Alliance has called for the Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) to investigate allegations that Virginia Vilakazi, wife of former uMngeni municipal manager Dumisani, attempted to defeat the ends of justice after the former boss was arrested for drunken driving and malicious damage to property in the early hours of Wednesday.

He crashed his Jaguar into the fence of a house in Mpophomeni. Witnesses reported that he seemed drunk.

Virginia Vilakazi, a police constable in Hilton, is alleged to have asked home owner Owen Ndlela why he involved police as she “hoped she could sort this out”.

KZN DA leader Sizwe Mchunu said: “If it is proved that Mrs Vilakazi did utter this remark, then this would be tantamount to defeating the ends of justice.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Vincent Mdunge said action is taken if there is a formal complaint against an officer.

Dumisani Vilakazi made a brief court appearance yesterday.

The case was adjourned to December pending the results of blood tests.
