DA 'fully behind PMB as capital'

2009-03-17 00:00

THE DA has said it "unequivocally" supports keeping Pietermaritzburg as the capital of KwaZulu-Natal.

In a statement released at the weekend, the party said whatever coalition options might be open to it after the elections, it is not prepared to negotiate over the capital status.

"It makes no sense to cause a major upheaval to the provincial administration by moving departments and personnel away from Pietermaritzburg to an alternative capital - whether it is Ulundi or elsewhere," it said in a statement.

The DA statement follows recent articles in the media that suggested that the DA might consider restoring Ulundi as the capital city should it enter into a coalition with the IFP after the electioin.

"The provincial government's energy should rather be focused on creating opportunity, improving service delivery, providing quality education and healthcare, and cracking down on crime. Those are the DA's priorities in government," the DA said.
