DA: party leadership nominations close today

2012-10-15 00:00

CAPE TOWN — Nominations for leadership positions in the DA, for which elections will be held during the party’s national congress in Soweto next month, close today at 5 pm.

Although expectations are that Helen Zille will be re-elected unopposed as the party’s leader, supporters for the Eastern Cape leader Athol Trollip, and possibly Trollip himself, may attempt to vote out two of Zille’s key supporters from their leadership positions.

The past few months saw many meetings to garner votes against Doctor Wilmot James, national chairperson; and James Selfe, chairperson of the party’s federal management.

Trollip did not yet want to comment on the issue, but DA sources say he, as well as some prominent DA members in Gauteng who voted for him last year against Lindiwe Mazibuko for the party’s parliamentary leader, are central in the attack on James and Selfe.

The Western Cape’s MP, Masizole Mnqasela, whose sharp criticism of Zille and Mazibuko saw him spearhead Trollip’s parliamentary campaign last year, may challenge for either James or Selfe’s position, with Trollip the other challenger.

The expectation is that both challengers will have strong support in the Eastern Cape, Free State and parts of Gauteng. James and Selfe could expect strong support from Mpumalanga, the Northern Cape, North West and the Western Cape.
