DA questions bodyguards for manager

2011-09-19 00:00

DEMOCRATIC Alliance caucus leader in Msunduzi Municipality, Bill Lambert, has asked questions about the bodyguards that have been tasked to look after the acting municipal manager (MM), Thokozani Maseko.

This was during the executive committee meeting under municipal manager’s report at the council chamber last week.

“I was absolutely alarmed that the acting MM suddenly has two hefty bodyguards watching him wherever he goes. What has suddenly happened to warrant this development? Is the safety of his person now in doubt?” asked Lambert.

He told council that he was particularly disturbed that one of Maseko’s bodyguards has been working on issues surrounding the suspension of officials and matters surrounding forensic reports.

“He was also appointed by former administrator Johann Mettler to investigate queries of the previous Auditor-General’s reports of 2009,” he said.

He said they were not aware that this person had received any training to become a bodyguard. “This is particularly worrying because the bodyguard in question is supposed to be finalising the issues surrounding the suspension of officials,” Lambert said.

Msunduzi Mayor Chris Ndlela responded by saying that this is a security issue and asked Lambert to discuss the matter with management.

Lambert also questioned council about the full report on the city’s electricity woes. Administrator Sibusiso Sithole responded to Lambert by saying they are still finalising the reports on this matter and once the findings have been completed the reports will be sent to council.
