DA to approach police minister

2014-10-16 00:00

DEMOCRATIC Alliance shadow police minister Dianne Kohler-Barnard said that Aiyer should be removed from the police service.

“The revelations from this court transcript, added to the damning report by Nazeer Cassim SC, who ran the Booysen matter, shows that Colonel Aiyer should not be a member of the SAPS.

“The magistrate refers to possible obstruction of justice, misconduct, contamination of a crime scene, and defeating the course of justice. It took nothing more, nor less, than a front page story in the Sunday Times based on claims of a man facing prison, for the national police commissioner to suspend an entire unit and the head of the Hawks in KZN,” she said.

“This head has now been cleared on four occasions, but has been suspended yet again, for the fifth time in what can only be described as a witch-hunt. However, when a magistrate states that Aiyer should be investigated, a year later no action has been taken against him, this speaks of protection on the part of those above him. I will write today to the minister of Police, asking why no investigation has been undertaken,” she said.
