DA wants SAPS probed over Scorpion

2008-01-26 00:00

Cape Town — The Democratic Alliance has submitted a written request to the Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) to investigate the events surrounding the arrest of Scorpions investigator Ivor Powell last week.

DA Safety and Security spokeswoman Dianne Kohler-Barnard said yesterday there are strong parallels between Scorpions advocate Gerrie Nel and Powell’s arrests.

“The excessive use of force in both cases seems to be sending a clear message from the SAPS to the Scorpions about who is in charge.

“The ICD have already agreed to our request to investigate Nel’s arrest on the basis that there may have been a potential abuse of power by the police,” she said.

Powell was arrested this week for alleged drunken driving while travelling in a car with Americans gang boss Igshaan Davids.
