DA wants assurances Selebi case will not be affected once Scorpions are disbanded

The Democratic Alliance is to demand assurances from the ministers of Justice and Safety and Security that the investigation into National Police Commissioner Jackie Selebi will not be affected if the Scorpions are disbanded in June.

DA Safety and Security spokeswoman Dianne Kohler-Barnard yesterday voiced deep concern that the case against Selebi is scheduled for the same month in which the ANC intends to disband the Scorpions.

“The DA will be fighting to ensure that this does not stop justice from being done,” Kohler-Barnard said.

In a statement, Kohler-Barnard questioned what will happen to the documents, computers and files of the Scorpions if they are disbanded.

“What steps will be taken to protect and preserve the investigations and all of the information compiled to date?” she said.

The DA spokeswoman said the DA will submit questions to the ministers of Justice and Safety and Security in order to confirm what special measures will be taken, in the event that the Scorpions are disbanded in June, to prevent the cases against Selebi and the other people the Scorpions are investigating from being compromised.
