DHS claim Sidney Atkinson trophy following class performance

2014-09-23 00:00

DHS have done the business in athletics recently, winning the Northwood Quadrangular and retaining the Sidney Atkinson trophy, the latter a cup on the line against old enemy Glenwood High School.

At the Northwood meeting, DHS joined hosts Westville Boys’ High and Glenwood in an attempt to maintain their hold on the Northwood Anniversary Shield they have won for the past five years.

With points of vital importance, the DHS lads competed in as many events as possible in an effort to stay on top of the standings.

When the dust had settled, DHS athletes had recorded 19 wins, 12 second spots and 10 thirds. Connor Wilson was awarded a medal as the best U17 athlete and Samkelo Cele achieved the same accolade at U19 level.

The Atkinson trophy was established in 2010 between DHS and Glenwood in a bid to revitalise inter-school athletics. It was first hosted by DHS who have enjoyed consistent success against their Durban rivals, although Glenwood were, until this past weekend, the current cup holders.

Competing at King’s Park, DHS took home the cup with another strong effort from their athletes. St Charles joined the fray, but all attention was on the two Durban schools as they ran for pride, passion — and that cup, which now once again sits proudly at DHS.
