DHS unbeaten to date

2010-08-03 00:00

A NUMBER of football matches took place this past week, with DHS, Westville and Maritzburg College appearing to be the teams to beat at this stage.

College was involved in three matches this week, winning two and drawing the Saturday game against Michaelhouse. Khaya Langa scored all the goals as they beat Carter 2-1, Clifton 2-1 and then the one-all draw with the boys in Balgowan.

In the latter match it was an early goal by Langa and a goal in the last two minutes, from an apparently offside position, which earned Michaelhouse a draw. College found the immaculate Fifa surface at Michaelhouse (they hosted Paraguay during the World Cup) very challenging, as it was more slippery than the surfaces on which they normally play.

Carter who has done well in the Wednesday matches particularly, lost their first game going down against College, in a tense game where a number of injuries occurred.

On Saturday, Carter drew in a game against Pinetown, after being 0-1 down at half-time. They did well to come back after Pinetown had picked up the tempo after scoring their first goal. Both goals scored by Carter in the second half were scored by Smanga Sishi. The game could have been won by Carter as they had the better of the second-half exchanges and missed a scoring chance.

DHS who are unbeaten thus far had another good win against Hilton, winning 2-1.

Westville, playing on the top-quality, Fifa surface at Northwood (they hosted Greece), were highly motivated and after winning the Kloof Tournament last week supremely confident against the home side.

They dominated possession and the long and short passes seldom missed their target. Mayibuye Mthembu unleashed a thunderous goal to take his side into the lead at the break.

Cameron Cavenaugh put Westville into a 2-0 lead after some enterprising play in the second half.

Clifton 1 Maritzburg College 2, Carter 1 Maritzburg College 2, Kearsney 2 St Charles 1; Hillcrest 2 Kloof 2, New Forest 0 Port Shepstone 2, DHS 2 Hilton 1, Michaelhouse 1 Maritzburg College1, Carter 2 Pinetown 2, Northwood 0 Westville 2
