DHS waterpolo player sets new record

2013-11-05 00:00

JOSHUA Ungerer, a Grade 12 pupil at DHS, has set a record at the school that will be a tough one to break.

This past Saturday, he dived into the pool to represent his school in his 150th match in the 1st waterpolo team, against Durban North rivals Northwood. It was a thrilling match won 8-7 by DHS.

A goalkeeper, Ungerer began training with the 1st side when in Grade 8, playing league later that year with the team. The following year, in Grade 9, he was a fully fledged member of the team and has represented them since.

In all that time, he has missed one game, due to sickness, when in Grade 10.

He played so regularly, Ungerer never realised he was close to such a milestone. “My dad asked me how many games I had played and when I realised I had played close to 100, I started keeping a running record,” he said.

It’s a record to be proud of and it marked Ungerer’s final match for the school as he will now pay attention to his matric exams.

It’s no surprise he has received honours for his achievement and contribution to the game at DHS and he is a huge inspiration to other pupils who also play the sport.
