DNA linked to rapist, says girl’s family

AN alleged rapist who was released on a technicality in June has been charged again and appeared briefly in the Pietermaritzburg Regional Court yesterday.

The man, who is from the Midlands, cannot be named. He is charged with raping his 13-year-old stepdaughter over several years and making her pregnant with his child.

The teen gave premature birth to a stillborn baby late last year.

Family and friends of the child were horrified when the charges against the accused were withdrawn provisionally by a regional court in June because documents were outstanding in the police docket.

In terms of court procedure the case should be transferred to the regional court only when police investigations are complete.

The family of the victim said DNA evidence in the docket positively linked the accused to the teen’s rape.

It is believed that the accused is living in a different province.

He appeared in court again yesterday after being summoned.

The case was postponed to September 17.
