DNA test clears Rape accused

2013-04-18 00:00

A 36-YEAR-OLD man from Edendale who was charged with the rape of a 91-year-old Hayfields resident last October has been cleared by DNA evidence.

Regional court prosecutor Rene Padayachee withdrew the charge on the instruction of the director of public prosecutions.

Padayachee confirmed that DNA tests had conclusively excluded the man as being the assailant.

The Witness reported last year that the man was arrested by the Pietermaritzburg cluster tracking team at a beerhall in Retief Street soon after the rape.

He was allegedly identified from CCTV footage as someone who had visited the victim’s home more than once, begging for food.

The woman had also pointed the man out in an identification parade.
