DPW: Dept biggest defaulter in KZN

2010-08-05 00:00

THE national Department of Public Works (DPW) is one of the worst rates defaulters in KZN. Chairperson of the provincial Finance Committee, Belinda Scott, said yesterday that she is fast losing patience with the department.

Scott said she is aware that the department’s debt to eThekwini Municipality is close to a billion. She heard yesterday that it is also one of the biggest debtors on the Msunduzi Municipality’s books, owing over R31 million.

Addressing the joint sitting of the Standing Committee of Public Accounts, finance and local government, Scott said national Treasury needs to take the matter up with the department because it is affecting municipalities’ ability to carry out service delivery.
