DSTV: viewers offered new HD channels

2012-08-30 00:00

DSTV subscribers will be offered a new-look service from October 1 after MultiChoice announced yesterday it planned to move its services from the existing IS10 and IS7 satellites to a brand new satellite, the IS20.

The company has taken a lifetime lease on the satellite, which was launched in French Guiana in South America.

“We have made a significant investment in this satellite and we will continue to invest in new technology … we want our customers to have access to the best entertainment delivered through the best technology available,” said Collins Khumalo, chief executive officer of MultiChoice South Africa.

Thanks to the new satellite, the company will be expanding its number of high-definition (HD) offerings, with seven new channels being added on October 1. They include five new

M-Net movie channels and Studio Universal and Universal Channel in HD. Six standard definition (SD) channels will also be added to the existing service.

Two new Africa Magic channels will be launched — Africa Magic Movies 1 and Africa Magic Entertainment — on the premium bouquet in southern Africa, and viewers will have to get used to a new channel numbering system.

While no disruption is expected by Multichoice, DSTV customers who record programmes or have favourite channels on the HD PVR decoders will need to reset their choices.

DStv is also taking the opportunity to put HD and SD channels on the same channel number. This means that if you are a DStv Premium customer with an HD PVR, you will receive M-Net HD on channel 101.
