Dad elated about Beetge’s release

“WE both fought very hard for this day and I only wish Marie could have been here, but God had other plans,” he added.

Drug mule Tessa Beetge’s father, Swannie Swanepoel, yesterday said he was elated that his daughter would be home soon.

Swanepoel, who resides in Margate, said he first “heard the news from a journalist in the Cape”.

He then decided to use his contact in Brazil to dig deeper and find out if it was true or not.

According to Swanepoel’s source, a journalist, Beetge was released.

Beetge was sentenced to eight years in prison in 2008 after she was caught with 10 kilograms of cocaine in her luggage at an airport in Brazil.

She claimed she knew nothing about the drugs, and was sent overseas by Sheryl Cwele and Frank Nabolisa to do admin work.

Cwele and Nabolisa are serving 12- year sentences in prison.

Swanepoel said Beetge’s mother, Marie, would have loved to see her daughter come home.

Marie died in October last year.

“I know that she is coming home and I am so excited.

“I cannot wait to hold Tessie in my arms.

“She’s waiting in a police holding cell to be deported,” said Swanepoel.

He said he had not told Beetge’s daughters, aged 15 and 16, about their mother’s release yet as he was still waiting for confirmation.

“I know that it’s been all over the news and on the Internet, but I would like to tell them once I am certain. I don’t want to disappoint them.”

His granddaughters now live in Gauteng with their father.

Swanepoel said his daughter had written to him about the plans she has once she has been released from prison, but he would like to keep that private for now.

“Once Tessie is home, she can decide whether she would like to tell the media what her plans are.”
