Dad puts baby in boiling hot water

A ONE-YEAR-OLD baby sustained severe burn injuries, inflicted by her father when he punished her for defecating on Tuesday.

She was taken to Northdale hospital where she is recovering.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan said the little girl sustained severe burn wounds to her lower body. “A 25-year-old male suspect, who is believed to be the biological father of the child was subsequently arrested at the hospital.”

Jeevan said the mother of the child (whose name is withheld) had left her child in the care of her husband and a child minder and had gone to work.

When she returned home at 4 pm, she noticed that her house was in disarray and that her husband and child were nowhere to be found. The child minder told her that at around 8 am, “the child made a mess” and the man became angry.

“It is alleged that the man boiled a kettle of water and emptied it in a washing basin. It is further alleged that the man then took the child and placed her in the boiling hot water, seriously injuring her,” said Jeevan.

The man then took the toddler to hospital for treatment. Jeevan said police believe the man was trying to “discipline the child and teach her a lesson”. The suspect will make a court appearance in the Pietermaritzburg court shortly,” said Jeevan. — WR.
