Dakota six: remains flown to Pretoria

2012-12-20 00:00

BEREAVED family watched as the remains of six crew members who died when their Dakota crashed in the Drakensberg arrived at the Waterkloof air force base yesterday.

The six coffins were flown in a Hercules C130 cargo plane from Durban to Pretoria.

Lieutenant-General Zakes Msimang, chief of the air force, saluted the coffins.

The investigation into the cause of the crash, in which 11 air force members died on December 5, is at an advanced stage and most of the conclusions have been reached.

The wreckage has been cut open and most of the pieces were taken to an air force training area near Dragon Peaks in the Drakensberg. Brigadier-General Piet Burger said some parts would be sent for laboratory analysis to confirm the cause of the crash.
