Dalton mother’s anguish over girl’s rape

2011-08-31 00:00

A DALTON mother is trying to come to terms with her daughter’s rape after she was singled out from among seven other young girls on Sunday evening.

The mother, who cannot be named to protect the identity of her 11-year-old child, said the children were on their way to fetch wood at about 6 pm when they were accosted by a 37-year-old man.

He grabbed the young girl, dragging her through the sugar cane plantation and into the nearby bushes.

“My daughter says she was taken to what used to be a farmhouse where she was raped throughout the night.

“I have sleepless nights because whenever I close my eyes trying to sleep I picture this man violating my child.

“I feel empty inside when I think about what she went through as she couldn’t walk when she was found.”

The mother said the girl was taken to hospital with bruises to her face, hands and head.

Pietermaritzburg police spokesperson Lieutenant Joey Jeevan said the police and the community searched for the child and found her at a nearby homestead at about 11 am on Monday.

Jeevan said the Dalton and Pietermaritzburg search-and-rescue units searched in the Umvoti Slopes and D- section areas of Dalton.

A suspect was arrested just after the child was found in one of the homesteads in the area.

“It is believed that she managed to escape from the suspect and hid at the homestead about one kilometre from her home.

“She was immediately taken to a district surgeon in the Dalton area for treatment,” said Jeevan.

She said the suspect will appear in the New Hanover Magistrate’s Court soon.
