Dam good news: Umgeni reservoirs all full

2013-03-18 00:00

AS National Water Week starts this week, Umgeni Water is in the blue — the dams in the uMngeni catchment area are all full and six of them are overflowing.

Umgeni Water spokesperson Shami Harichunder said this was as a result of the above- average rainfall of the last four months.

eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality, Msunduzi, Ilembe district, Ugu district, Sisonke district, and uMgungundlovu district municipalities all get their water from Umgeni Water.

Altogether the utility provides water to an estimated five million consumers.

The healthy water levels will mean no water restrictions will be imposed in these municipal areas, but this does not mean that water should be wasted.

Harichunder said the water situation during the winter months would be monitored at municipalities that are supplied by small systems.

Spring Grove Dam, which is under construction in Rosetta in the Midlands, will have a positive impact on the water resources of the uMngeni system, which feeds Pietermaritzburg and Greater Durban, when it is commissioned in 2014.
