Dames new rugby coach for Glenwood

2014-01-21 00:00

RUDI Dames has stepped into the role of head coach for the first rugby team at Glenwood High School, taking over from Sean Erasmus, who has headed for Paarl Boys’ High after six years as first team coach.

Dames is no stranger to the intricacies of the “Green Machine”, having been assistant coach since 2003.

He brings a solid pedigree and record to the position, rugby being a massive part of his life since his school days. He played SA Schools’ rugby in 1999 and was chosen for the SA U19 side in 2000. That same year, he joined the Potchefstroom University Rugby Institute, studying toward a BCom degree.

With rugby his focus and passion, he jumped at the opportunity to pursue his career in 2002, when he was given the chance to play for the Sharks U21 side. His move to Durban has definitely been Glenwood’s gain.

“From 2004 to 2006, I played for the Wildebeeste and in 2006, was part of the Sharks’ Currie Cup squad,” said Dames. “I had a taste of overseas rugby in 2007 when I played in Nice, France, and on returning to Durban in mid-2008, played for Collegians.”

Rugby being the game it is, injuries soon had the final say in Dames’s playing days and he shifted his focus to coaching, where he is currently busy with his IRB Level 3 course.

“I have been fortunate to coach teams at different levels,” he said. “Since 2009, I have coached the KZN Academy team and last year, was the Sharks’ U21 team’s assistant coach. At club level, I have been involved with coaching the Collegians U20 team for quite a while.”

Head rugby coach at Glenwood is another notch in Dames’s stick at the school where he is the director of the sports academy and involved from the rugby side with the Elite academy.

“My vision this year is for the Green Machine to have a successful season where each player can develop to his full potential and to create a premium rugby environment for the players as they take their careers forward,” he said.
