Dance 2 Inspire: crews compete to promote safer lifestyle choices

2011-10-07 00:00

THE youth are taking the fight against HIV/AIDS to the hip-hop battle ground, and dance crews will face off at the Dance 2 Inspire campaign at Winston Churchill theatre in Pietermaritzburg tomorrow.

Organised by a non-profit organisation, Youth of Choice, the campaign uses dance contests, talent concerts, skills development workshops and school outreach tours to educate young people about safer lifestyle choices.

Project leader Lungelo Sithole encouraged the youth to be part of the event as it is fun and educational. “Dance is more interactive and is a language that the youth understand... We want to get the children off the street and using their energy and time doing what they love instead of getting involved in bad habits. We want to give them an exciting platform to exercise their creative talents and build their self-esteem and bring on social change.”

The initiative was launched last year as a social awareness contest which sees local dance crews challenging each other. Hip-hop dancer C4 who will be judging this year’s event said they are looking for skill, passion and drive.

“We are looking for originality and talent so crews really need to bring their best moves on to the floor. The day is also about inspiration, so we need people to share their stories and just have fun. I am hoping that the audience will leave the event educated about HIV/Aids,” said C4.
