Daniel joins Sharks XV for cup tie

2014-04-04 00:00

ALTHOUGH the Sharks are not in Super Rugby action this weekend, former skipper Keegan Daniel will travel down to Ceres in the Western Cape for the Sharks XV’s Vodacom Cup game against the Boland Cavaliers tomorrow.

Daniel, who played his first game of Super Rugby last weekend — and scored — joins Deon Kayser’s squad as he bids to gain some match fitness ahead of the Sharks’ tour, which starts at the beginning of May.

Daniel is one of three players with Test match experience in the side that will take on the Cavaliers, the others being Tonderai Chavhanga and lock Marco Wentzel, who played his two games for the Springboks back in 2002.

After starting on the bench for the first four games of the Vodacom Cup campaign, Wentzel, who missed the majority of last year’s Currie Cup due to injury, will start for the first time this season.

And, with the Sharks experiencing a crisis at lock following the injuries to Pieter-Steph du Toit and Anton Bresler, the experienced 34-year-old Wentzel could find himself on the plane to Australia and New Zealand.

The Sharks XV have won four from four and sit at the top of the Vodacom Cup South Section, one point ahead of the second-placed Free State XV and three ahead of the third-placed Western Province.

The Pumas, leading the North Section, are the only other undefeated side in the competition. The game will kick off at 4 pm.
