Daring move by cop rescues man

2014-11-06 00:00

POLICE Brigadier Francis Bantham showed her mettle yesterday when she single-handedly took on an entire crowd of people, preventing them from assaulting a man.

Eyewitnesses say that a huge crowd had gathered in front of the Provincial Treasury building beating a man who had allegedly tried to steal a woman’s hand bag.

Bantham, who was on her way back to her office dressed in full uniform, “acted on police instinct”. She stopped the car in the middle of the road, switched on the blue lights, and ran into the huge crowd.

“They were tramping and hitting him. I had to fight and push my way to the middle of the crowd and begged and pleaded for them to stop the assault,” Bantham said. “I took hold of him right in the middle of everyone.

“Anything could have happened to me as well, because they were all angry, but I cooled them down.

“I left my cellphone in the car and I had to ask a community member to fetch it so I could call for back up.

“They would have killed him if I didn’t get there in time,” she said enthusiastically.

Police arrived on scene shortly and arrested the man.

According to Bantham, the man had stolen a woman’s handbag outside the magistrate’s court and the community chased him down.

“He admitted that he only took the purse because he needed R200 to buy his child a Christmas gift,” Bantham said. “We need to show that we as women in the SAPS will not turn back for any situation.

“We are just as competent as the men; whether we are constables or brigadiers, we must do our jobs.”
