Dash and Crash: Maritzburg College in top form at Drak Challenge

AFTER a successful season last year having won the KZN Schools Canoeing season, Maritzburg College Canoeing were back to their winning ways.

In the recent Drak Challenge, Louis Hattingh, Damon Stamp and Travis Wilson took the top three positions respectively.

The K1 event of the Dash and Crash on Saturday was also the first race of the KZN Schools Canoeing season.

Once again, Maritzburg College dominated the senior event with Travis Wilson winning the U18 category. Damon Stamp was second and Tyler Wilson, Louis Hattingh and Andrew Woodgate taking fourth, fifth and sixth positions respectively.

Brandon Orpwood, a Grade 10 pupil, came fifth in the K1 section of the SA Open Canoe Slalom event.

The event was won by Donovan Wewege, who left College at the end of 2012, and he beat two canoeists from the Czech Republic, who came in second and third place.

With the Unlimited Dusi Canoe Marathon less than three weeks away, College have been preparing to make it a memorable year in canoeing.

As part of their 150-year celebrations, College has secured their own Batch which is due to leave at 7.30 am on Valentine’s Day.

College are expected to be at the Ernie Pierce weir in full force to support all College canoeists participating in the Unlimited Dusi 2013.

Not only are the College paddlers competing for the top junior position, but College Old Boys that are competing for the coveted distinction of being the Unlimited Dusi Champion, including Andy Birkett, Ant Stott and Len Jenkins.
