Daughter died for dignity

2011-08-09 00:00

A DAUGHTER’S attempt to salvage her mum’s dignity resulted in her tragic death in a Phoenix blaze yesterday.

When Indhrani Naicker smelt smoke she got out the bathroom and rushed to alert her sleeping daughters, Sue and Levashnee, and the family managed to escape without injury.

But Levashnee (28) noticed that her mum had only a towel wrapped around her went back into the house to get her a nightgown — and was never seen alive again.

The drama unfolded yesterday as neighbours looked on helplessly at the burning second-story flat.

Said a shaken Sue Naicker,“Levashnee ran back in to get a gown for mum. It was only after a few minutes that we realised that something was terribly wrong because she wasn’t coming out. We were all screaming for her but it was in vain.”

Levashnee had apparently underestimated the ferocity of the blaze and was evidently suffocated by the smoke. She passed out in one of the bedrooms and was brought out by fire-fighters.

Phoenix police spokesperson Lieutenant Louise Naidoo said police responded to a call from one of the neighbours and summoned the fire department upon their arrival.

“A brave attempt to rescue the deceased proved too little too late, and she was declared dead at the scene.”

The house was a smoke-darkened shell yesterday as family and friends converged to pay their respects to the family, who are staying with a neighbour.

Police are investigating the cause of the fire.
