David versus Goliath in Murray Cup qualifiers

2014-08-09 00:00

ALTHOUGH local club rugby leagues have been wrapped up, there is still a knockout tournament to be won.

The qualifying round for the Murray Cup kicks off today, with a number of fixtures around the province.

It is somewhat a case of David versus Goliath as Premier division teams take on First division sides to seal their place in the quarter-finals of the Murray Cup knockout tournament.

Families, wives, girlfriends and club rugby enthusiasts will have to pick who they want to watch as all but one of the matches start at 2.30 pm this afternoon.

A tasty battle gets under way in Sydenham, as Jaguars host Moor Cup runners-up College Rovers. The First division outfit will take the game to Rovers. Expect to see plenty of running rugby.

Northwood Crusaders travel to South Coast Warriors for their clash. Crusaders had a good season in the Moor Cup and were genuine contenders in the opening rounds of the league. Meanwhile, the Terriers will be fired up playing in front of their home crowd.

Amanzimtoti go inland to Vryheid, but should have little trouble playing away from home. Toti had a great season and gave College Rovers a scare when they visited during the Moor Cup and were unlucky to lose when former Griquas and Cheetahs wing Dusty Noble scored at the death.

Zululand Rhinos take a short trip down the road to Richards Bay for their clash. Richards Bay will be fancied to beat Rhinos, who struggled to put together a side in the closing stages of the league.

Moor Cup champions Durban Collegians visit Harlequins and should make easy work of the side that were relegated from the Premier division last year.

A highway derby awaits Hillcrest as Pietermaritzburg Collegians play away from home. It is a tough one to call, as Collegians had another tough season in the Premier division.

UKZN Impi hit the road to visit Piet Retief. Impi had a difficult time in the Premier division and had to forfeit a couple of matches during the season. Piet Retief could progress to the quarters.

Lastly Varsity College take on Newcastle Highlanders. Old Boys will face a tough test as Highlanders were winners of the First division. It will be a big clash up front.

All matches kick off at 2.30 pm except for the Hillcrest-Collegians clash, which gets under way at 5 pm.
