Day of mourning

2008-03-06 00:00

Monday this week was one of the darkest days yet experienced on South Africa's roads with a death toll in accidents of over 60 people, 32 of them in KwaZulu-Natal. Within the space of two hours these 32 travellers were killed, and others injured, in separate accidents in three different places. These tragedies, according to Transport MEC Bheki Cele, were all caused by reckless and negligent driving.

Today has been set aside by the provincial government as a Day of Mourning for the victims and their families. Alongside the grieving, steps need to be pursued with urgency to enhance the effective presence of traffic police on the roads.
