De Villiers, Morkel in ICC World Cup squad

MELBOURNE — The Proteas might not have won a first World Cup trophy, but at least there was consolation prize yesterday for two of the players.

AB de Villiers and Morné Morkel were both included in the International Cricket Council (ICC) Team of the Tournament.

De Villiers, the South African captain, scored a total of 482 runs in seven innings at an average of 96,40.

It includes three half-centuries and the staggering 162 runs not out (from just 66 balls) against the West Indies in the group stages.

Only New Zealand’s Martin Guptill (547) and Kumar Sangakkara of Sri Lanka (541) scored more runs than De Villiers.

Morkel was the most successful South African bowler in the tournament with 17 wickets and the fourth leading wicket taker in the competition.

The 30-year-old fast bowler had an impressive average of 17,58 and maintained a run rate of just 4,38.

De Villiers, however, was not appointed captain of the team, which also has five New Zealanders, three Australians and Sangakkara. That honour belonged to the Kiwi captain Brendon McCullum.

West Indies opener Chris Gayle, who scored the first double century in the history of the tournament, did not crack the nod, while there was also no room for Protea spinners Imran Tahir and JP Duminy.

Tahir took 15 wickets (at 21,53), while Duminy took a rare hat-trick in the quarter-final against Sri Lanka.

Australia won a fifth title on Sunday when they overpowered New Zealand by seven wickets in Melbourne.

The World Cup team was selected by a panel of six people, including Geoff Allardice, the ICC’s general manager, and former England captain Michael Vaughan.

“It was very difficult to choose a group of only 12 players, after an exceptional event that saw a lot of brilliant individual performances — including two double centuries, 38 centuries and two hat-tricks,” said Allardice.

“There were a lot of other players who came close to the team, such as Mahmudullah [Bangladesh], Shaiman Anwar [United Arab Emirates], Wahab Riaz [Pakistan] and Imran Tahir, but there was unfortunately no place for them all.

“We believe the team we have selected would beat any team.”

ICC World Cup team: Brendon McCullum (NZ, captain), Martin Guptill (NZ), Kumar Sangakkara (Sri Lanka, wicketkeeper), Steven Smith (Australia), AB de Villiers (SA), Glenn Maxwell (Aus), Corey Anderson (NZ), Daniel Vettori (NZ), Mitchell Starc (Australia), Trent Boult (NZ), Morné Morkel (SA), Brendan Taylor (Zimbabwe, 12th man).
