Deadline closure at IEC runs smoothly

2011-03-26 00:00

THE submission deadline of political parties’ final lists of candidates for council seats went smoothly yesterday.

Police were on the alert after weeks of upheaval and infighting among ANC supporters dissatisfied with the lists.

Police were present at the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) offices, but pitched battles in various areas were not taken to the door of the IEC as last-minute submissions were being made.

People spotted at the Msunduzi Electoral Offices in Church Street complained about ANC candidates in their wards.

It is believed they were there to register independent candidates, though they refused to confirm this.

The IEC said everything went smoothly, and all major political parties met the 5 pm deadline.

Police officers arrived at the IEC offices in Symonds Centre at 4.59 pm to ensure that the cut-off time for submissions was observed.

Msunduzi electoral officer Nick Davids said major parties made things easier by making their submissions several days before the cut-off date.

He confirmed that a number of independent candidates were registered as well, although the IEC had yet to count them.

Dissatisfied ANC members in several wards this week threatened to field independent candidates after the ANC chose nominees other than those preferred by communities.

IEC assistant municipal electoral officer Brian Khanya said the IEC has identified violence hot-spots in the Msunduzi area.

These areas will be closely monitored during the run-up to the May 18 election and on the polling day itself.
