Deadline to comment on rates changes extended

2013-02-01 00:00

MSUNDUZI residents will have more time, until February 8, to comment on the municipality’s draft proposed rates and tariffs changes for 2013/14.

Skumbuzo Mpanza, process manager for sound governance, asked the executive committee (Exco) for the extension yesterday.

He said the initial deadline for comment had been January 25, but the municipality had received several requests from organisations and individual residents who felt they did not have enough time to prepare their submissions.

Exco agreed to the request, which means that public hearings on the submission that were to take place from January 29 to 31, will now take place on February 12 and 13.

This is the first stage in public consultations on the city’s revised rates and tariffs.

Ward councillors will discuss the proposed revisions with residents in their wards.

Residents often complain about hefty increases in their rates and tariffs only when they see them on their municipal bills for the first time. However, by then it is too late to change anything as the increases would have been passed by council and budgets for the different municipal services would have been drawn up based on the revised figures.

Public consultation on the proposals will be conducted at different times in at least the next two months. The budget with the final revised rates and tariff changes must legally be passed by the council before May 31.
