Dearest wishes written in Madiba’s birthday card

2013-07-17 00:00

BOTH young and old showed up at the Suncoast Casino in Durban yesterday to show their support for Madiba by signing their name on a huge greeting card.

The card, in honour of Nelson Mandela’s 95th birthday tomorrow, can hold 10 000 signatures and would make the Guinness Book of Records if the target is reached.

Also present at the event were six players each from Manchester City and AmaZulu who signed autographs for fans. The teams play each other at the Moses Mabhida stadium tomorrow.

Tapuwa Kapini, goalkeeper for AmaZulu and the Zimbabwean national team, said it was a privilege to play at the match and come out to show support for Madiba.

“He’s definitely one of the world’s best men, he’s an icon, he’s a legend and he’s the father of this nation. Our match on Thursday [tomorrow] won’t be an easy one,” he said.

Among the Man City players were Spanish midfielder Javi Garcia, Ivorian midfielder Yaya Toure and Englishman Jack Rodwell.

Amid the excitement, a more solemn signing of the birthday card took place metres away from the stage, where members of the public sent their dearest wishes.

Nkululeko Mngomezulu (21) said: “I love Madiba. He’s such a role model and he fought for our rights, and made the country what it is today.”

Kristin Oliver (25) from Kimberley said: “I really wanted to be a part of this event. Nelson Mandela has offered so much to our country and I just wanted to wish him a happy birthday.”
