Death: SA road runners shocked by death of well-known coach

2010-01-08 00:00

THE road running community was shocked yesterday morning with the news that Two Oceans, JAG, and Run-On-Line coach Dave Spence had died at his home in Thornton Cape Town on Wednesday, writes NORRIE WILLIAMSON.

Spence, who had been coaching since 1978, took on the role of head coach for Pinelands Athletics in 1984, and more recently launched the Adidas Athletic Club in Cape Town.

His experience and expertise saw him cover the full gambit of race distances. He produced South Africa’s top sprinter, Johan Rossouw, who clocked 10,08 seconds over the 100 m in Johannesburg in April 1988.

At the other end of the scale he guided marathoner Makahosonke Fika, who ran a 2:10:13 in Berlin in 2003 and represented South Africa in the World Championships.

Spence, who was 62 years old at the time of his death, leaves behind three daughters.
