Death crash driver assaulted

2010-05-27 00:00

A TRUCK driver was allegedly assaulted after he ran over and killed a construction worker who was working on R56 near Richmond yesterday morning.

Netcare911’s Jeffrey Wicks said a group of road workers were rebuilding part of the road when one of them was run over by the truck at about 7 am.

“He sustained polytraumatic injuries and was declared dead by Netcare911 paramedics at the scene.

“The driver of the truck was then seriously injured in an attack by the incensed road crew,” Wicks.

He said the driver was taken to hospital to be treated for the injuries.

Richmond police were unable to confirm the assault incident. But they said the deceased was pushed into the road by a road construction machine before he was hit by the truck.

“We are not sure what kind of machine that was. He jumped from the machine before it pushed him into the road,” said a police officer.

Meanwhile, Captain Dolf Otto of the collision unit said a police constable suffered serious injuries when his vehicle collided with a truck yesterday morning.

He said the accident happened at the intersection of Gladys Manzi (Murray) and Reggie Hadebe (Richmond) roads.

“He [the constable] apparently hit the side of the truck,” said Otto.
