Death threats alleged

A NORTHDALE woman was allegedly assaulted by the wife of Pranil Muhabir, a Ward 28 Minority Front (MF) candidate, on Saturday after an argument between the two neighbours.

The woman, who wants to remain anonymous, said she has no idea why she was attacked by Muhabir’s wife, Rookaya, and her relatives.

“I went downstairs to buy some groceries and when I was walking in the passage she screamed at me using abusive language. I was manhandled by Muhabir’s wife’s relatives, while the wife assaulted me on my head.”

She said both women scratched her body as well as her face. “I have been scarred for no apparent reason by the wife of a person that wants to be a ward councillor.

“If we vote for MF in our area, is this the kind of abuse we will be allowing to rule us?”

She said she reported the incident on Saturday at Mountain Rise police station.

“Ever since I opened a case against these people I have been receiving death threats from the same people. I have been sworn at by various people who are trying to scare me to drop the charges.”

Muhabir said he first thought that the matter was simply a domestic issue among friends because he was out of town when the incident occurred.

“Even though my wife has opened a counter-charge against this woman, I intend to resolve this amicably,” said Muhabir. “I also believe that this matter was intentionally done to discredit me politically because this matter has nothing to do with MF.

“I am amazed at how much this has been blown out of proportion because these people have known each other for many years.”

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan confirmed the incident was reported.

“Apparently there was an argument … it is alleged that three suspects assaulted the complainant,” said Jeevan.

She said the three were charged for common assault and are due to appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court tomorrow where they will be issued with a warning. Police are investigating circumstances surrounding the incident, Jeevan added.
