Deep defending costs birds win

POLOKWANE — Following their 1-1 draw against SuperSport United on Saturday, veteran Moroka Swallows defender Sipho Mngomezulu said the Dube Birds felt like they lost the game when they conceded a late goal.

Swallows and Matsatsantsa shared the spoils in a PSL encounter at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.

Veteran striker Siyabonga Nomvethe broke the deadlock for the Soweto giants on the stroke of half time before Clinton Daniels snatched an equaliser at the death.

Mngomezulu (32) said defending too deep cost them maximum points on the night.

“It was really a tough one for us,” he said. “Because I think we played well in the first half, then we started defending too deep in the second half.

“We allowed them to come at us but we can give it another go going forward, that’s all I can ask from the guys.

“The coach always says that a 1-0 lead is a very dangerous score and we must try and get an insurance goal.

“We had chances to do that in the second half but we couldn’t convert our chances.

“A draw felt like a loss to us because we were almost there and we only needed extra concentration in the dying minutes of the game.

“We lost it and we were punished.”

A draw kept Swallows at the bottom of the log standings with only four matches left to play.
