Defending champs KZN Inland off to a good start at U16 IPT

2010-06-15 00:00

DAY ONE of the Boys’ U16 Interprovincial Hockey Tournament, held at Maritzburg Colllege’s Pape’s Astro and A.B. Jackson Greenfields Turf, proved a good one for defending champions KZN Inland.

Inland, under coach Brandon Swart, accounted for Western Province B 4-0 in yesterday’s dawn patrol match and shaded Northern Gauteng 4-3 in the afternoon to stake an early claim for a top-two position in Pool A of the premier A Section, as well as a berth in Thursday’s semi-finals.

Southern Gauteng have got similar designs on Pool A after hammering Northerns 3-0 and Southern Free State 8-0 to take pole position with a goal difference of six over the hosts.

Pool B saw last year’s finalists, Western Province A, drill North West 7-0 and also earn a fortunate 2-1 win over Border-Amathole, who only have themselves to blame for wasting penalty corners. The East London lads beat Eastern Province 3-1 in the morning.

KZN Coastal had a 2-1 win over Eastern Gauteng and meet both WP and Border today in what will be pivotal Pool B matches. In their lone match, Inland meet South Western Districts at 8.50 am at the ABJ.

Other than KZN Inland drawing 1-1 with Free State and losing 3-1 to Border, there were no results forthcoming from the Girls’ U16 IPT in Potchefstroom.

The U16 Grant Khomo Rugby Week in Upington saw KZN face the daunting task of tackling the powerful Blue Bulls; and it wasn’t a pretty picture for the Natalians when they lost 36-14. KZN meet the Gauteng Lions at 12.30 pm today.

The U13 Craven Rugby Week in Graaff Reinet was another tough first day for KZN as they went down 10-5 to the fancied Free State.

KZN face Northern Free State Griffons at 11.45 am today.
