Delayed results, parents call on Nzimande

PARENTS of uMgungundlovu FET level four students have called on the Minister of Higher Education, Blade Nzimande, to compel the college to speedily release results that were due out last month.

Thandiwe Zondi and her son, Siyabonga, have been travelling between Pietermaritzburg and Camperdown trying to get answers on his results from the college, to no avail.

“We have been waiting for more than six weeks for our results,” said Siyabonga.

KwaZulu-Natal Education spokesperson Sihle Mlotshwa said the results were delayed because there were problems that the Department of Higher Education was still ironing out.

He said the problem was not limited to KZN.

Parents who want to take their children to other tertiary institutions have approached Umgungundlovu FET College for more clarity on this issue.

“To my surprise, officials at the college have told our children that the results are still lying in Pretoria, still waiting to be moderated,” said Zondi.

This was in contrast with what was said by Nzimande who has spoken at length about the transformation of colleges for further education and training.

“The minister has spoken about the role these colleges should play in providing quality skills education and training.”

“To these affected children and parents, what the minister has pledged to undertake is more political rhetoric which is devoid of substance.”

“The whole skills development question the minister is referring to cannot be realised if his department is still failing to meet its targets like releasing results,” Zondi said.
