Delport cameo puts Dolphins in a handy position against the Knights

2011-10-14 00:00

A WELL-PLAYED 89 by middle-order batsman Cameron Delport yesterday set up a good first day’s performance by the Dolphins in their SuperSport Series match against the Knights at Kingsmead.

Coming in at 125/5 Delport hit boundaries at will and often frustrated the bowlers in his 152-run partnership with Daryn Smit.

Earlier in the morning the home side won the toss and elected to bat on a wicket that looked to offer assistance to pace bowlers.

Captain Imraan Khan and fellow opening batsman Divan van Wyk got off to shaky starts after some inspired bowling by Johan van der Wath and Quinton Friend.

With the score on just eight runs Van Der Wath picked up his 350th first-class wicket when he trapped Van Wyk LBW. Soon afterwards Ahmed Amla went out for 10.

Glenn Addicott and Khan stabilised the innings, scoring freely around the park at times. Addicott showed good discipline, judging the ball on its merits.

Khan, seemingly putting aside the disappointment of the past two weeks, played superbly throughout the day, falling just before lunch for 50.

Obus Pienaar pitched the ball up and Khan played the ball to short extra cover, who took the catch low to the ground. Khan stood his ground, thinking the ball had touched the turf before the catch took place. The umpires conferred and he was given out.

The Dolphins went into lunch on 84/3.

The Knights came back with an inspired spell after lunch when Friend got the wickets of Bosman and Addicott. Smit and Delport stabilised the innings, Delport playing a cameo on his way to 30 after which he slowed down considerably.

The home side ended the day on 306/6 before bad light stopped play with 13 overs left in the day’s play.
