Demolition: New era for traffic flow

2010-08-23 00:00

THE partial demolition of the Chota Motala Road bridge over the N3 on Saturday marked a new chapter in improving traffic flow in and out of the city.

The N3 was closed from Cedara to New England Road and traffic was diverted through town while the work took place.

At the demolition site, about 20 workers directly managed the demolition. They used a hydraulic crusher and excavator to remove the piece being demolished, which fell on to soft sand that had been laid on the freeway to absorb the impact and prevent damage to the road surface.

Bradley Naidoo, the site manager of the Chota Motala interchange and N3 upgrade, said the old bridge is being demolished in stages and the plan is to have the new bridge wholly built by January

He said the upgrade will ease traffic flow greatly. “When this is done, there will be three lanes going in and out of the city over the N3.

“There will also be a lane for vehicles coming from Chota Motala Road to join the N3 without waiting on the robots and that will improve traffic flow.”

He said that besides a few people failing to obey the speed limits, the management of traffic was without incident.

“One or two people were driving above the speed limit, which was a concern for us because this is a construction site and if anything were to happen, a lot of people would die.”
