Derby the game to watch

2012-05-05 00:00

THERE are three top matches in KZN today with two other local teams playing in Gauteng. The match that is likely to be most tightly contested is the derby at Michaelhouse where they face Hilton.

Hilton have already played 13 matches, but have lost six of them. Michaelhouse have played nine games losing three, but against generally weaker opposition than Hilton faced. The two teams that both have played are the improving Coastal sides, Westville and Glenwood.

Michaelhouse lost both these and Hilton lost against Glenwood and drew with Westville. While this could make Hilton favourites, the occasion often brings in an unknown factor and the underdog will come out on top. What makes it interesting is that there is not really an underdog in this first game of two between the two independent schools.

Kearsney will be hoping to get off to a good start again as they did last week against Hilton. They host DHS, who have not had the best of seasons, losing more than they have won. The only team they have both played is St David’s. Kearsney won that game 1-0 while it was one of the DHS losing games.

Glenwood will host Northwood and this match could well go down to the wire. They have both played four common sides, but the results do not show one side particularly stronger than the other.

Maritzburg College will have a tough encounter against KES in Johannesburg. The results are very similar, with both losing against Wynberg and both beating Grey College, Hilton and Grey HS. The only result that was slightly different was against Pretoria BHS where KES drew 1-1 and College lost 1-2.

St Charles will be hard pressed to win against St Alban’s College in Pretoria. Although they have lost a number of games they have only been by narrow margins and they drew against KES, which shows they must have a useful side.
