Derby weekend offers surprises

2012-02-04 00:00

SCHOOLS from the Midlands will be feeling the effects of a hot, crowded week with T20 matches and the Sunfoil Night league.

The sides most affected, Maritzburg College and Michaelhouse, will meet for the third time this year. Hilton and St Charles play sides from the Free State and Durban respectively.

In the Durban area the derby games between rivals DHS and Glenwood and Kearsney and Westville will be worth watching.

Both the teams playing on Goldstones have improved over the few weeks of the term. Michaelhouse lost by 11 runs against College in the 40-over game at the Oval, and in the Inland T20 final College beat Michaelhouse by four wickets, but only after a stand-out innings by Tim Guise-Brown, who rescued them from a dangerous 41 for five.

College will likely face the game with some confidence, having won twice, while the Balgowan lads will be determined to win their third game between the two schools.

Grey College will be pleased to be playing away from home as their fields are waterlogged after some heavy rain this past week. They have not played as much cricket as Hilton, which could be to the advantage of the home side.

Hilton will have to pick themselves up after losing against Michaelhouse in the Sunfoil league on Thursday and against College in a T20 game. Grey will never be an easy fixture.

Westville host Kearsney, and with the home side already having the reputation of being the side to beat in the province, it will be tough for Kearsney. Kearsney have won both the Saturday games, while Westville lost their first game, surprisingly, against College.

St Charles travel to Durban to play Clifton. St Charles, after taking a bit of a mauling in their Saturday games and most of the Sunfoil fixtures, will have a chance to build some confidence among the players in today’s game.

The match at Glenwood is always keenly contested and even though DHS again appear to be relatively weak, they could spring a surprise as the derby games do not always go to plan.
