Desperately searching for love

From My Point Of View

“I DON’T want liberating — I want imprisoning, suffocating in the arms of my man.” This line from Steven Berkoff’s From My Point Of View sums up the desires of the unnamed female character.

Adapted from one of Berkoff’s short stories in the book, Gross Intrusions, and starring two of Durban’s best performers, Clare Mortimer and Darren King, the play tells the story of one woman’s desperate search for love and affection in post-war Britain.

Forced to work to pay the bills after her father is critically injured, she doesn’t get to be the wife and mother she so desperately wants to be. Instead she becomes nothing more than an easy lay for the men she meets at her local dance hall. And even these sexual encounters are quick and furtive, taking place in darkened hallways and alleyways.

What makes her story all the more tragic is that the character doesn’t seem to realise that she could choose a different path.

Mortimer and King are mesmerising, funny and incredibly inventive as they use a bed, glitter ball and chair to create the different scenarios.

The play, which is being staged as part of the Playhouse Company’s Women’s Festival, is at times funny, deeply moving, unflinching in its use of language — and is, frankly, one of the finest two-handers I’ve seen in a long time. Don’t miss this opportunity to see two of our finest performers in action.
