Determined Jené looks to a high jump to get into handcycle racing

JENÉ Frost is taking the saying “the sky is the limit” literally. The 30-year-old paraplegic is hoping to raise funds and awareness by skydiving on Saturday.

The motorbike accident that paralysed Frost at 15 did not change her adventurous spirit and sporty nature. Frost said, “Since [the accident] I have done everything in my power to live a ‘normal’ life.” She swam with dolphins and jumped off Oribi Gorge, the world’s highest gorge jump.

Frost would like to become more involved in sport, which is a challenge living in Pietermaritzburg where there are limited facilities for disabled sporting, she says.

Frost was introduced to the sport of hand cycling, and would love to take up the new challenge. “A disability will only disable you as much as you let it, and I want to show people that being confined to a wheelchair does not need to limit what you want to do in your life,” she said.

However, the hand cycles are imported from the USA and can cost up to R50 000. This has motivated Frost to take to the skies in order to raise the funds to allow her to take up the new sport.

Angels Skydiving Club in Eston has agreed help Frost in her plans for a tandem jump at the weekend.

Frost added: “I want to show people without disabilities that we can do just as much as they can. It may take longer or need more planning, but we can do it.”

If you are interested in contributing, call Frost at 083 388 5676. She says that any excess funds will be donated to the Guide Dog Association of Southern Africa.
