Tatham Art Gallery Board holds its annual meeting in the Coffee Shop before the walkabout at 5.30 pm on November 26. All welcome.


If you haven’t yet visited the stunning Heath Retrospective at the Tatham Art Gallery, then join Jinny Heath and Dr Juliette Leeb-du Toit, from the UKZN Centre for Visual Art, for a walkabout from 6 pm on November 26. Safe parking is available on the Parliament side of the Tatham building and refreshments will be provided upstairs at the cost of a small donation.

Hilton College theatre is hosting a solo exhibition by Brent Dodd in the Normand Dunn Gallery from November 26 to 28. Dodd, who has painted and taught Art at Hilton College since 2000, leaves the school at the end of the year to travel and paint in Central Africa.

Maritzburg Philatelic Society meets on November 29 at the St Matthews Parish Hall, (corner Olsen Road and Hesketh Drive), Hayfields at 7.30 pm. Thematics evening and an award-winning exhibit on rhinos. Visitors welcome, stamp collectors at all levels. Birdlife KZN Midlands (Pietermaritzburg) is holding an end-of-year braai at Benvie in the Karkloof on December 6. Meet for a walk at 6.30 am. Braai fires will be lit at 11 am. Bring braai food and chairs, as well as family and friends. Admission R20.

The Pietermaritzburg Underwater Club meets Thursday evenings at its Clubhouse in Kershaw Park (next to the tennis club). Come and learn more about spear fishing, scuba diving, underwater hockey etc. The Underwater Hockey season opened on October 1 - beginners and newcomers always welcome. The Paws and Claws Bikers Sea Run will take place at the Carousel Holiday Resort in Hibberdene from today until Sunday. The event promises to have something for the entire family from a wheelie machine, live bands, pool parties as well as a flea market for the shopaholics. The annual Echo Craft Bazaar opens its doors to the public on November 26 with a stunning range of handmade and homemade goodies to entice you into parting with some of your hard earned money. There are also two workshops – one on mosaics and the other on beading – and for just R75 per session you can learn how to be more involved with craft and start creating your own beautiful things. The Karkloof Farmer’s Market will be holding its annual Carols by Candlelight Evening Market on Thursday, November 26. There will be delicious meals on offer as well as the usual market offerings. The market will be open from 5.30-9 pm and the carols will take place from 7-8 pm. Admission is R10 adults and R5 children, proceeds to charity. Throughout December the Karkloof Farmers’ Market will also holding special Christmas Markets from 7 am to 11 am where a variety of Christmas gifts will be on sale. The Gay and Lesbian Network will be taking to the streets of Pietermaritzburg on November 28 – and you’re invited to join in the fun and festivities of their annual parade! The procession through town is aimed at drawing awareness of the gay community and HIV and Aids, and is also a collecting point for the East Coast Radio Toy Story campaign. The parade starts at the Network offices in Burger Street, stops at the Pietermaritzburg City Hall and ends at the Royal Showgrounds (Chatterton Road) where there’ll be food stalls, entertainment and fun for the whole family. Jason Hartman and his band have been recruited by St John’s DSG in Pietermaritzburg for a fundraising concert for the school’s hockey tour to Singapore and New Zealand in April 2010. The Pietermaritzburg Amateur Music Society (PAMS) Classical Christmas Concert, takes place on Sunday at 3 pm at the Cathedral of the Holy Nativity in Pietermaritzburg. Parking will be available in the parkade opposite the Cathedral in Langalelebele (Longmarket) Street and bays for disabled people will be available at the Church Street entrance of the Cathedral. The PAMS choir and orchestra will be joined by soloists, Millicent Majola (soprano), Andrew Butler (bass baritone), Katie Karnezos (soprano), and organist Christopher Cockburn to perform a programme which includes Mendelssohn's Hear My Prayer and exerpts from Handel's Messiah.

Celebrated South African acoustic guitarist, singer and songwriter, Nibs van der Spuy will perform at Overstone Farm near Fawnleas in the Noodsberg district (near Wartburg) on Sunday at 12 noon. The audience is invited to bring deck chairs and picnics and set up from 11.30 am. Proceeds will go to the Mvoti AIDS Centre. Hilton College Theatre is hosting a concert by the Drakensberg Boys Choir on November 26 at 7.30 pm. The Drakensberg Boys Choir will perform a concert, titled Hark! the Herald Angels Sing, at 7 pm on November 30 in the Pietermaritzburg City Hall. South African rockers, Just Jinger, will be performing at three venues in KwaZulu-Natal as part of their Milk and Honies tour.
