Msunduzi Hospice’s coffee shop, The Courtyard, in Swartkorpz Road, Pietermaritzburg, is open daily from Monday to Saturday. Glenwood Community Forum is hosting a New Year’s Eve Café Style Street Festival on December 31 from 7 pm to 2 am in the streets of Glenwood – with the restaurants spilling out al fresco style onto the pavement and road for the evening. Davenport and Helen Joseph Road will be closed for New Year’s evening allowing tables and chairs to occupy the road, café style. Live bands will be playing in the early evening with DJs taking over later. Tickets are R70 (children under 10 free). Inquiries: Carla at 031 201 0090.


Tatham Art Gallery in Chief Albert Luthuli Street (Commercial Road), Pietermaritzburg, is hosting children’s workshops from Tuesday, January 11 to Friday, January 14 between 9.30 am and 12 noon. During the workshops, which are aimed at children between six and 12 years old, participants will look at examples of appliqué work from two current exhibitions in the dallery. They will also draw shapes on paper, select the best and use them as patterns on fabric to make a glued picture. All materials will be provided, but please bring your own scissors if you can. Children will also look at examples of beadwork in the gallery, and learn some basic design and bead-making skills from Zama, who has been taught by her mother, well-known bead-maker Eunice Cele. Admission is R50 per child per day and refreshments are included. Registration is at 9 am.


Weekly meditation classes - learn to meditate in Pietermaritzburg on Wednesday evenings from 6.30 pm to 7.30 pm at 60 Oakleigh Avenue, Wembley and in Howick on Thursday evenings from 5.30 pm to 6.30 pm at Dr Shearer's rooms, Medical Centre Annex, 113 Main Street. The ancient practice of meditation will help you to reduce stress, overcome frustration and find inner peace. Everyone is welcome, and the classes are easy to understand and practice. The Natal Museum will be closed on the 25, 26 & 27 December and will reopen on Tuesday, 28 December 2010. The Museum will also close on the 1 & 2 January 2011 and will reopen on the 3 January 2011.


Cathedral of the Holy Nativity on Friday 24 December at 17h30 for a traditional Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols to start your real Christmas celebrations. The augmented Cathedral Chamber Choir will sing carols ranging from the medieval “Here is joy for every age” and the legend of “King Herod and the Cock” to a modern carol written in October 2010 by David Orr, currently Director of Music at St George’s Cathedral in Cape Town.
